Sound and Image Department, School of Arts

I worked as full-time teacher at the Sound and Image Department from 2008 to 2013. During this period I taught the following courses:

Audiovisual Technologies
[3ECTS] [Undegratuate studies in Sound and Image]

The classes are divided in 3 segments: (1) Audiovisual Language, (2) Image and (3) Sound.
In the first segment of classes, the student are introduced to the basics of film language and the way how a film production is organised (production structure, departments, teams). On the second segment, students are introduced to the basics of professional video camera, illumination set and steady cam operation. The third segment is targeted to develop skills on sound recording, teaching the different techniques for capturing sound in situations as different as, the capture of dialogue in a movie or recording a voice for radio. I thought this last segment.

Interdisciplinary Project I and II
[4 ECTS] [Undegratuate studies in Sound and Image]
[4 ECTS] [Undegratuate studies in Sound and Image]

During these two courses (the second being the continuation of the first), students are invited to actively and semi-independently participate in hands-on projects taking place in the university. The projects are all related with artistic and audiovisual areas, such as radio, filming, publishing, design, multimedia, executive production, web and music. The students I supervised were usually participating in: Bit_Radio and Bit_Radio Records

Artistic Project - Áudio Production I and II
[6 ECTS] [Undegratuate studies in Sound and Image]
[6 ECTS] [Undegratuate studies in Sound and Image]

In these two courses, students are asked to produce a Sound Design work under the topic of sound narratives. During the first semester students accomplish all the pre-production of the project and train specific skills that will be useful for the following production stage. In the second semester students start engage on production and post-production of their projects, which are usually related to radio, film sound, audiobooks or electronic music.

Game Audio
[5 ECTS] [Master in Sound and Image]

This module will expose students to the core skills, workflow, and concepts involved in creating and implementing game audio. Pro Tools will be the software used during the whole semester in order to edit audio and Unity will be the software used to implement audio in games. Class time is divided between demonstration and hands-on practice.

Sound Design for Video
[9 ECTS] [Master in Sound and image]

This course is intended to present the students with advanced concepts and techniques in the art of sound-design for moving images (primarily video). The course methodology follows a theoretical and practical approach. The theoretical resources will emphasize 1)the visioning and analyses of state-of-the art examples on sound-design and 2)presentation, analyze and discussion of baseline literature. The practical part will be based on 1) hands-on short exercises, where students are asked to apply specific knowledge and 2) a final and bigger project where students are responsible for the whole sound-design of a short movie: sound concept, recording and mixing in 5.1.

Pre Production of Final Project (Audio)
[6 ECTS] [Master in Sound and Image]

In these classes, students are engaged in pre-production activities for their final Sound Design Project, such as the developing of a work schedule, sound recording tests, script analysis, voice castings, location recordings, etc. Besides pre-production tasks, some other learning activities can occur, in order to provide students with tools and knowledge specific to their final projects. A particular case, is the design and manufacture of a personal electro-acoustic sound instrument, as a way to apply practical skills and technical competences.

Production of Final Project (Audio)
[6 ECTS] [Master in Sound and Image]

In these classes, students are engaged in production and post-production activities for their final Sound Design Projects, which include recording sound, mixing, mastering, dubbing, radio production, coding applications, building sound installations and instruments. At the end of the semester, is expected that all students have accomplished their goals and concluded the Final Project, which is then presented in a public ceremony and evaluated by a grand jury, along with the written dissertation.

Listen to Cinema
[4th Cycle Education - Senior School]

This course delivers the basics of film sound production, following a descriptive and theoretical approach. Students are introduced to the sound design language and concepts behind the production of a movie, ass well as to the techniques and stages of production. Practical work is seldom accomplished.
